Kate’s Story
“I was in my mid twenties when I realised that alcohol and drugs had become a problem, and I was making increasingly bad choices that were having a real impact on my life. I lost friends, relationships and even jobs.
While there were a lot of people around me doing similar stuff, I always knew that for me it was different. My reliance was more than recreational and my life was heading down a path that I might not recover from.
Having effectively achieved nothing in the 10 years since leaving school, I realised that if I didn’t make a change, then in another 10 years I would be in the same place, or worse.
I always knew that I wanted a career and that I wanted to make something for myself, but I never could have done it if I had carried on the way I did.
That was my biggest motivator. I wanted to live a meaningful life. And wanted to feel well again.
So, I began by stopping smoking. But the funny thing about behaviour change is that when you take control of one thing, other things start to change too. It’s a snowball effect and before I knew it, I had stopped taking drugs, was eating well, exercising, and looking after myself.
My outlook on everything around me changed, and opportunities started presenting themselves. Yes, I had to make real compromises, but it was time to concentrate on myself. I no longer worried about what the people around me were doing.
I worked in several volunteer positions and qualified in a range of coaching and therapeutic disciplines before my real career began. I started working with Public Health, who put me through their training and assessment to qualify as a health and wellbeing coach, specialising in weight management, alcohol, and mental wellbeing. Finally overcoming my crippling self-esteem issues, I progressed in my career to work at strategic level on health improvement and behaviour change.
10 years on from that early crossroads, and having completely turned my life around, I took the decision to become a freelance consultant and coach so that I could work at a more personal level with my clients and have the flexibility to spend more time with family.
During my journey there were many people who believed in me. Mentors who wanted to see me succeed. Those people who nurtured me have a lot to do with where I am today.
I wanted to be that person for other people.
You have to have someone on your side that believes in you. That’s me. I help people take control of their lives and fulfil their potential.
Away from the professional stuff, I live with my partner and daughter in The New Forest. You’ll find me there, being outsmarted by a 3 year old, attempting to master the perfect downward dog with varying degrees of success and avoiding joining WhatsApp groups…
I’m a real person after all.”
